A note on eigenvalues of random block Toeplitz matrices with slowly growing bandwidth

This paper can be thought of as a remark of \cite{llw}, where the authors studied the eigenvalue distribution μXN\mu_{X_N} of random block Toeplitz band matrices with given block order mm. In this note we will give explicit density functions of limNμXN\lim\limits_{N\to\infty}\mu_{X_N} when the bandwidth grows slowly. In fact, these densities are exactly the normalized one-point correlation functions of m×mm\times m Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE for short). The series {limNμXNmN}\{\lim\limits_{N\to\infty}\mu_{X_N}|m\in\mathbb{N}\} can be seen as a transition from the standard normal distribution to semicircle distribution. We also show a similar relationship between GOE and block Toeplitz band matrices with symmetric blocks.Comment: 6 page

Shock Wave Effects on the Laminar Skin Friction of an Insulated Flat Plate at Hypersonic Speeds

An approximate theory on the phenomena of interaction between the shock wave and the laminar boundary layer on an insulated flat plate at hypersonic speeds has been formulated. Results on the rate of growth of the boundary layer thickness and the rate of decay of the shock wave strength have been found for M_1^(2(2+w)R_1^-1 = O(1). A new set of formulae for the average skin friction coefficient, C_F, over an insulated flat plate at hypersonic speeds has been obtained. Calculations on the basis of the new C_F formulae yield the data shown in Figs. 5 and 6. Contrary to the conventional theory which predicts a steady decrease in C_F as M_1 increases, the present results indicate that C_F may increase with M_1 at hypersonic Mach numbers

Where to Display What? Using AR to Improve Work Performance

    Get PDF
Augmented reality (AR) is emerging as a next-generation interactive technology with the ability to display information in the immediate field of vision (i.e., near-eye display). This study investigates the interplay between information provision channels and information types on worker performance. A field experiment reveals that workers who follow instructions shown on AR glasses achieve higher work attentiveness and work performance than workers who receive this information on a mobile phone. Moreover, the effects of AR on work performance are moderated by information type. When the instructional information is highly dependent on the physical context, AR is more helpful in improving work performance. However, when the information is highly complex, the superiority of AR is weakened. This work contributes to the IS and HCI literature by revealing the value of AR in industrial organizations, and the boundary conditions for which AR affects worker performance

Three Taiwanese students' identity transformations: the complexity within the same cohort of international students

    Get PDF
Although the complexity of Chinese-speaking international students' (CHISs) identity transformation has been emphasized in previous research, there is a perceived linear and causal pattern between studying abroad and being intercultural. This pattern of thinking results in the risk of treating all the CHISs as the same in each cohort of students. Drawing on Bourdieu's notion of habitus, this auto/ethnographic study followed three Taiwanese international postgraduate students' lives over one year to elucidate the complexity of their identity transformation. The findings suggest a variety of identity changes resulting from the participants’ evaluation of their past, present and future situations
